A faux hawk would be a good in-between, cut the hair short on the sides, longer on top. Gel it up to look a little like a mohawk.

The mohawk is fashionable, a lot of kids are bringing the mohawk in. I say let him have the mohawk, my son has it and so do about 60% of his friends, and he is only 3 But i've noticed it in the JR high and High schools kids too!
