What is a good deterrent for gophers?

I don't want to harm them; I just don't want them tearing up my land.

Some people say that wet dog fur is a good deterrent for gophers. Also, I have seen services offered for "vacuuming" gophers.

I don't know if this would kill them or just scare them, but a friend of mine used to fill up their holes with water.

Not much. A cat or two can help as can surrounding gardens with daffodil bulbs. Gopher purge plant really doesn't phase them so your left traps, and then you have to drive the gopher to somebody else's land or chemical repellents. Research which ones will be most convenient for you to use.

Many electronic deterrents like thumpers, ultrasonic devices, and recorded distress calls have questionable functionality. Likewise chemical or natural odor-based treatments have limited efficacy. Pest control experts recommend removing the food supply - usually grubs or other insects that attract animal pests. You can treat your land with natural, chemical or benificial predator insects to alleviate the problem.
