One could say "ventre à bière" which is an informal but a literal translation. It also means "pot-bellied" and both have a similar connotation to the idiomatic expression: "grosse brioche" which points out the largeness of the person's stomach (in a not so friendly way). The first one shouldn't be seen as a pejorative though.

The French phrase "grosse brioche" is another way to say someone has a fat stomach or gut. This phrase is the slang way to say your friend has a "beer belly. "

There is no gently insulting French phrase, apart from "le beer belly", the French sometimes use the English expression. You could say he has "un goitre à brasseur" - a "brewer's goiter" - but that is not in common usage. The German word "Bierbauch" might be your best option.
