The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine, so it's part of the digestive tract. Some believe that it is where most iron is absorbed into the body. It is full of enzymes that aid in breaking down food, hence it is the location of most of the body's chemical digestion.

It is the first part of the small intestine. After food has started to be digested by the stomach, it goes straight to this part of the small intestine and its functions are to break down food and to regulate how often the stomach empties.

The small intestine connects the stomach to the large intestine. The first section of the small intestine is the duodenum. It is C-shaped and about 25 centimeters long. For the purposes of anatomic reference, the duodenum is divided into four parts. Bile and pancreatic juices are secreted in the duodenum to continue the digestive process.
