The gallbladder serves as a storage organ for excess bile from the liver. When a person consumes food, the gallbladder aids digestion by releasing this bile to emulsify and break down the fats near the beginning of the small intestine at the duodenum. It is easily removed because it only stores excess bile, not any vital function for the body.

The human gallbladder stores about 50 milliliters of bile (1.7 fl oz) . The bile is released when the food containing fat enters digestive tract by stimulating the secretion of cholecystokinin (CCK) . The bile become more concentrated after stored in gallbladder .
