As volcanoes grow, gasses and magma, pushing from beneath escape through vents, cracks, in the earth. At some point, the center-core collapses, leaving a crater in the peak.

A caldera volcano is one in which the mountain was created by the volcano. The dome of the volcano has since collapsed, creating a crater inside the volcano. That crater is called a caldera, and a volcano with one is called a caldera volcano. Many caldera volcanoes have lakes within their craters.
