It is a chemical reaction between vinegar (acetic acid - acid) & Soda (Sodium bicarbonate -Base) Acid & base nutralises each other & produce carbon-di-oxide which forms bubbles with detergent.

You can, so long as you use Baking Soda. If you tried to use club soda or soda water, it would not work. Put a couple tablspoons in the base of your volcano, and poor the vinegar on top and watch it go!

Yes, if the "soda" you are referring to is common baking soda. Any acid will react with the baking soda to release carbon dioxide gas, making foam with much more volume than the liquid vinegar and powdered baking soda started with. This is, in fact, the classic toy volcano mixture.

We have made several volcano models and have successfully used baking soda and vinegar in them. Put the baking soda in first and a few drops of food color for effect. Then pour the vinegar in slowly and it will 'erupt'.
