You are probably thinking of a millipede or a centipede. They are flat, with many legs. They will curl up in a ball if threatened. You usually find them in rotting plants or under downed trees.

If it is found on dead leaves or rotting wood, it may be a flat millipede. Check if it has 2 pairs of legs per segment.
