What is a "backsplit" house?

My wife prefers this style but I don't understand what it is.

From what I've heard and seen I think that a backsplit home is a multi-level house with the staircase partway back into the house. This house has like a split entry, except there are rooms in front of the staircase. They are usually built in a sloping lot. Hope this helps.

A "frontsplit" looks like a traditional two-story across the front and a one-story bungalow in the back. A "backsplit" is the opposite. The floor plan is a split level but this only apparent from the side view of the house. From the front or rear, a backsplit appears to be, respectively, a single story and two-story.

A backsplit home is similar to a front-split or a side-split home. Many people use the terms interchangeably even though they are different. A backsplit typically refers to a house with multiple levels, that from the front appears to be a single story bungalow.
