What happens when files that contain large amounts of information are zipped?

Well when compressed all the redundant data is eliminated and the file is made smaller. When unzipped it is appears as it did before.

"Zippped" files are simply large clusters of data that are "compressed" into a smaller size in order to save space and/or combine them into 1 "folder"-like file. Compressing saves space, however data such as music/videos may lose some quality from this compression.
