When you crack your knuckles, you end up pushing the joint out of its normal orientation. A fluid inbetween your joints is stretched when you crack your knuckles, and doing so releases some of the trapped gases inside. The release of these gases produces the cracking sound.

You're just forcing the air in between your joints somewhere else. This causes no side effects, such as the rumored arthritis. Cracking your knuckles is perfectly acceptable and doesn't cause any harm to your body.

What is happening when you crack your knuckles is there is a release of oxygen which causes it to make the sound it does.
