What happened to Dan Blocker from "Bonanza"?

Blocker had gallbladder surgery and died of a resulting pulmonary embolism on 13 May 1972. The following (and last) season of Bonanza referenced the death of Hoss.

Dan Blocker played "Hoss" Cartwright, middle of three brothers -- Adam was played by Pernell Roberts, "Little" Joe by Michael Landon. And of course Lorne Green played their father. Blocker, sadly, died while the show was still running from a pulmonary embolism following gall bladder surgery. He lived December 10, 1928 - May 13, 1972.
