President Nixon ordered a break in at the Democratic Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, to plant bugs to steal information from the other campaign.

On June 17, 1972 five men were arrested for breaking into Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. The men were presumably looking for information about the Democrats' strategy for the election that year. Nixon was up for reelection. A White House tape recorded six days after the break in implicated Nixon in the cover up.

Nothing happened with Nixon directly, but Nixon allegedly ordered some operatives to break into the Watergate hotel to steal information from the democratic party. g. Gordon Lilly, and the rest of the burglars, were Nixon's "plumbers"; A team of secret agents, mostly CIA operatives, who reported only to the White House.
