Potassium permanganate has the formula KMnO4 and because of the number of oxygen atoms packed into it, it is a strong oxidising agent. Made industrially from potassium hydroxide and manganese dioxide with extra oxygen added by electrolysis in an alkaline solution. It has been used in rockets and can be used as a disinfectant as well.

Popular disinfectant potassium permanganate is a water soluble salt of potassium, KMnO4. Once put in water, potassium permanganate dissolves and produces a deep purple solution. Potassium permanganate has been first described in 1659 by a German chemist Glauber. In mid-nineteenth century London chemist Condy started commercial exploitation of the potassium permanganate as a disinfectant.
