A semi-detached house is one of a pair of houses joined together. A 'detached' house is one dwelling, a 'semi-detached' is one building split into two dwellings side by side.

A semi-detached house is simply a house that has 2 parts to it, connected by a bridge. Technically it is in 2 parts, but the connection makes it a full house. Each has independent plumbing and power. Some people rent out the other part of their house as apartment buildings.
