They are not insects, but a terrestrial crustacean related to shrimps and crabs. They feed on decaying plant matter. While they may be a nuisance, they are not harmful. They roll themselves into a ball for protection when threatened.

They are little black bugs that have a hard shell and they can roll up into a little ball. They normally roll up into a ball when you pick them up.
