Basically, a bone contusion is a bone injury which could be simple bruising of the bone, to a more serious injury below the surface of the bone without actually breaking the bone in two. Though not life threatening, a contusion can take longer to heal than an actual broken bone.

Bone contusions or bone bruise literally means a bruise on the bone itself. This kind of bruise takes more time to heal. The healing time will depend on the severity of the contusion. Getting an MRI test can determine how severe the bruise is and the average successful healing time is between five to sixteen months.

A bone contusion is also commonly referred to as a bone bruise or bone edema. A bone contusion is where the bone has experienced an injury with no outwardly sign of trauma (no broken bone). Damage is done to the surface of the bone along with the underlying sub-structure. Similar to a bruise on your skin, however involves the bone.
