In science, one seeks to understand processes, etc... One is driven simply by a desire to discover - e.g., laws governing electron-magnetic interaction. Its nice that this knowledge often has great practical application, but that is a secondary consideration.

Applying scientific principles to study is standard and does not change during experimentation. Experimentation leads to knowledge and theorems. These theorems are then utilized or applied by inventors making products.
