There are several possibilities. It could be anything from a loose gas cap, to a more serious problem. Go to Autozone so they can check OBD error codes (it's free).
I would say typically if you're not on a highway or haven't put to many miles on your car via. a lot of driving it's probably atypical of it being either an oil change problem, or something related to low car fluids.
The check engine light could mean a lot of different things. To know for sure you will need to have the codes scanned. This can be done by you local auto parts store for free or you can take it to a dealer and have them do it.
