PE stands for "Professional Engineer. " To earn this designation, the person must do the following: Complete a bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering college; Pass the 8-hour FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam; Complete four years in an engineering related job; Fill out an application for the PE documenting all these steps; Pass the 8-hour PE exam.

When you see the initials PE after a person's name, it means that individual is a Professional Engineer. Often Civil Engineers will go through the qualification exams to achieve this license, which involves taking an eight hour initial exam. They must complete a minimum of 4 years of experience in the field to take another eight hour exam.

Don't forget in california the Civil Engineer's need to take the California seismic principles and surveying exams in addition to the 8-hour PE exam.
