Why would a smoke detector beep three times for a period of 30 seconds?

I had a strange incident. A smoke detector went off and then 3 other ones in the house went off also. The alarm quickly beeped 3 times and then it did the same on the other units in the house. This continued for about 30 seconds and then stopped. It hasn't beeped since. Any ideas?
