Plastic electric kettles can contain chemicals that contaminate water when heated. These include chemicals like Bisphenol-A or BHA, which is banned in countries like Canada. A 2010 report from the FDA documented concerns regarding exposure of fetuses, infants, and young children to this substance. Check it out...

To be honest, they are safe but it depends on what this definition of safe means to you. Plastic kettles can be very hazardous to the health. Any material that is plastic and consumed from is just damaging the body due to the various chemicals it contains. So be aware.

They are safe, but they ate not good for health purposes. Any plastic material you find will contain some harmful chemicals. This will be dangerous to your health in the long run.

All materials have risks. All carbon polymers will evaporate at 650 F in the presence of oxygen. Most plastics start to become a problem at 250 F. Stainless Steel is a problem due to chromium (if Cr is scratched off). Nothing is 100 % "safe". Let the buyer beware.

Yes they are safe. I have used one for 4 years and never had a problem. There is even a safety feature so the base only gets hot when the pot is attached.

Yes plastic electric tea keetles are safe. These products have been around since the 1980s and have been improved over time. They have safety features such as cutout switches, whistles, and detachable plugs to help minimize or prevent heat damage or electrocution. Also, the materials they are made of are highly durable and are bad conductors or heat.

The issue is not whether they are mechanically/electrically safe - it is about whether or not dangerous chemicals are leaching into the water/tea you are drinking.  add a comment

Plastic electric tea kettles are safe, to a point. As long as your are monitoring while it is boiling water, it will be fine. However, if there is no water in it while it is on, you could be in trouble. This is possible if all the water evaporates out.

If used sensibly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, they should be no more dangerous than any other kind. As with any electrical appliance, or anything that gets hot, there is always a very slight risk. But a reputable brand, used carefully, should present no problem.

If/when they run dry AND safety-thermostat fails or is missing, then No. Uncontrolled-heat without-water could melt the plastic. Check with Consumer-Product-Safety-Commission(CPSC.Gov) for specific (or similar) recalls before purchasing a product.

They are reasonably safe. The water does not get hot enough to melt the plastic. Of course, they can be dangerous if mis-used, just like any other electrical applicance. Additionally, just like with a pot of hot water, scalds are possible with spills.

To be on the safe side, use glass or metal. I have been using a plastic kettle for 4 years but can not tell if it is harmful. I will switch to glass. It does cost a bit more but is worth the peace of mind. Good luck

Used properly the Tea kettles are as safe as conventional tea kettles. If used in a strange elecric plastic tea kettle fettish, that might not be so safe

They are for the most part safe. America would not let it here if it was known to be unsafe. Make sure you follow all the rules on it though.

Haha - America lets deadly and toxic products into the marketplace all the time. Give me a break. Our society is based on keeping us sick so the pharmaceutical companies can cash in billions annually. Why not make inferior products as well???  add a comment

Is there any good research on food safety of plastic kettles, rather than plausible speculation?
