The first stage they resemble bird droppings to camouflage themselves, they will then outgrow that stage and become bigger, black in color, and may have a white band around the thorax. As they grow they will become a beautiful bright green color, with yellow spots on their backs. They are also know as the parsley caterpillar, which they love.

The swallowtail caterpillar has a predominantly black colored wingspan with a black spot centered in an orange spot, located on the edge of the hindwing. The wingspan is approximately 3. 25 to 4. 25 inches. The mail of the species can be identified having a yellow band near wing's edge, whereas the female has a row of yellow spots.
