White blood cells are responsible for providing immunity for the body. When they are low, the body is more likely to be invaded by infection leading to sometimes severe illnesses.

Leukopenia (low white blood cell count) is a decrease in leukocytes circulating in your blood. Leukocytes are commonly referred to as disease-fighting cells. Leukopenia can be the result of a simple virus, side effects of medications (such as prednisone), or more ominous bone marrow dysfunctions. Leukopenia weakens your immune system and puts you at risk for infection, but is treatable.
