Question by  SuzyQ (17)

Could a low white blood cells count indicate liver or pancreas problems?

My test results from my life insurance test came back as low for my white blood cells. Could this mean a serious problem?

No- more likely causes for low white blood cell count usually involve the bone marrow. It's also possible that if you've been recently dealing with many serious infections, your body's struggle would cause you to lose white blood cells more rapidly than can be produced. Other possibilities include auto-immune disorders, cancer involving the bone marrow, or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

A low white blood cell count is not indicative of pancreatic dysfunction. It can be seen in liver cirrhosis, but not usually to a marked level. A low white blood cell count is typically in keeping with an acute or chronic viral infection, a nurtition deficit or a primary bone marrow disorder. See your doctor.

White blood cells fight infection in the body. An elevated white blood cell count indicates infection. A low WBC could mean many things, including leukopenia, which is a condition of decreased WBC that could be the result of liver problems or lupus. More tests are required to determined what, if anything, is going on to cause the low WBC.

Low white cells could indicate something serious such as a cancer, or it could be benign. Some labs vary by a few tenths as to what the normal is.

It may not be anything but there are some issues that could stem from these results. Some liver problems will show a low white cell count. A friend with pancreatis had low white cell counts too. Play it safe, call your doctor. If it turns out there is a problem it is best to catch it fast!

Well it could indicate either or. But also, it could just mean that you don't have enough iron in your system. But you know what, it could be serious. So I would investigate this further. Sometimes a lack of these white blood cells means you might have leukemia. Just check and be safe.
