Low anion gap is defined as the measuring difference between cation and anion in serum due to the loss of Albumin resulting in the generation of Negatively chareg ions.

A low anion gap means that there is a periodically decrease in the main anion in the blood, which is albumin. As albumin, which is a negatively charged protein, decrease in amount (hypoalbuminemia), other negatively charged compounds such as chloride and bicarbonate attach themselves in an effort to correct the problem, leading to a decrease in the gap or level.

Anions are negatively charged molecules, your body has more anions than positive molecules in a normal state. As the number of anions and cations get closer, the gap gets lower.
