From a religious standpoint, the bindi is symbolic of the third eye, a mystical symbol of higher consciousness, and is thought to be the center of the base of creation. Men, women and children wear the bindi when used as a religious symbol. Additionally, in a purely social context, Northern Indian women wear it to show they are married.

Its religious significance comes from its placement between the eyebrows, the sixth chakra, the seat of hidden wisdom. It is supposed to retain energy, strengthen concentration and protect against bad luck. Socially married women wear it as a red dot in order to show their married status.
