Reading someone else's text messages without their consent is a breech of privacy. It is as bad as listening to someone's voicemail. Text messages are just a different medium for people to send messages, which includes private matters. To begin with, going through another person's phone without their consent is snooping. It's very disrespectful to that person.

Generally, this is a bad idea unless you have their permission to read the text messages. If not, you are snooping and this is generally considered rude behavior. You likely would not like it if someone else read your messages without permission, so follow the golden rule.

In my opinion, it isn't moral to read someone else's text messages. However, I think there are certain circumstances where it is acceptable. For instance, if you have children under 18, I believe it is valid to check their text messages randomly. In fact, I think the child should be made aware of this when they first receive the phone.

Would you like or think it is deserved if someone were to secretly read your text messages? If you feel the need to read another's texts, than either that person is already too untrustworthy or you have trust issues you need to face.
