Death is a very difficult issue to discuss with someone. There is no "right" or "wrong" thing to say. Tell him/her that you are there for him/her on a regular basis. Moreover, say that you're sorry for his/her loss and that s/he can always call you no matter what. Be the best supportive listener you can be.
