Any rod will do when you are surf fishing so select one that you are comfortable using. It isn't necessary to cast a great distance because the fish are generally feeding at the break line. Sand crabs, dead or alive, are the preferred bait. You can also use clams, frozen anchovies and shrimp. The fish will surface for nearly anything.

You do not need to be a pro fisherman to go out and catch some fish in the surf. You will want to use a pretty heavy weight maybe 3 ounces. You will want to cast out as far as you can when the surf is out and wait.
