Proponents combine two data points. One is that over the last 20 years, American students have lost ground compared to Asian students. They go to school longer. Secondly, every year teachers experience students who have forgotten math skills and struggle to adjust to new study and sleep schedules. Those are the arguments.

The longer a break from a period of learning, the less information is retained. Year round education proponents in the United States either propose the same 180 days of schooling but with shorter summer and longer winter and spring breaks or 200 or so days of schooling.
