Old world style features a lot of tile, distressed wood, and interesting architecture. Exposed ceiling beams, metal scroll work, and chandeliers are common. The main theme is natural elements that look like they have been around a long time.

Agreed. Rugged features like wood ceiling beams, wrought iron, antique flooring is common. Found some photos here: Man I love those ceiling beams. My neighbor added faux beams to their kitchen and now we're thinking about doing the same thing. Lots of good images here: Old World Traditions Faux Beams  add a comment

Old style kitchens should be accented with brick and a large fireplace or hearth. The pots and pans should be cast iron and the counters should be wood or stone.

They are more functional for a more varied set of tasks. These tasks include cutting whole animals, such as poultry, from scratch. There is more cutting space, as is exemplified by a central "island" table or counter.

These style kitchens are usually done in an old world Italian style. You will want to look for natural stones such as stone and marble or granite. You might want to find a copper finish for the appliances and a wood burning oven.
