The expansion bay of a PS2 was made for adding a hard drive to the system. However, few games were actually produced to use or recognize a hard drive.

The Playstation 2 expansion bay can be used for multiple different peripherals. One of them being the PS2 HDD (hard disk drive). A network adapter was also made for this slot.

The expansion bay was used for the network adapter and/or the optional harddrive. You need the network adapter to play PS2 games online.

The expansion bay on the PS2 was for the hard drive or network adapter. I believe that Final Fantasy XI was the only game to use the hard drive. The network adapter will allow you to use an Ethernet connection to access online features of some games. I believe that the PS2 slim did not have this bay.

I believe this was designed so that a hard drive of a network adapter could be installed and connected to the system for networking.

The PS2 expansion bay was designed to support a hard disc drive (HDD) and the network adapter. The network adapter adds an ethernet port and enables online play. The HDD can be used in place of memory cards, and can be used to install games instead of having them read from the disc drive.
