What do I need to make miniature Zen gardens?

First you need a small tray or disk, which needs to be rough the size of a sheet of paper. The dish should be one to two inches deep. Then add a white fine grain sand, some black porous rocks and use a small wood rack to rack the sand.

First a base for the Zen garden. Many different ideas and items, like wooden or cardboard cigar box. Large ashtrays are good . Shallow dishes or pans. Go to your local thrift shop for many ideas. Sand and stones and a personal touch like mini figurines, candles, and shells. Make sure it includes your own personal touch in Zen garden

I used to make ours a 1 inch board that I had the local home depot cut for that I was able to use for the sides and for the bottom I used copper. I then got some sand of our beach and found a few shells that I liked. Remember to make it your own. Anything is right!

Get creative, and use items that mean something to you personally. Use small trays (1/4in-1 inch deep), any sand(fine grain), and rocks, stones, leaves, or any item you cherish. Put a smaller tray inside of a large one, and fill the outside with water. Add a small rake.
