If you're replacing an existing non-working 3 way switch use different colored electrical tape to identify where the existing wiring is terminated. After taping your wiring remove the existing switch and install the new one. Doing so this way will ensure the new switch works properly.

You must first determine if you have existing 3-way switch wiring before attempting to install 3-way switches. You need two (2) traveller conductors, one (1) hot or common conductor, one (1) switch-leg conductor and one (1) ground conductor.

Three-way switch is actually two switches controlling the same thing. To control a light at up-stairs one swich may be errected at down and other at up stairs
