What do I do if my hermit crab loses a leg?

Loss of a leg for a hermit crab does not mean certain death. It indicates something in the crab's environment is wrong, such as temperature, humidity or cleanliness. If these three elements are in order, next visually inspect your crab for mites. If mites are present give your crab Stress Coat baths and clean the tank and contents completely.

While it is not a death sentence, you should carefully examine the tank conditions and your crab care. Stress can also cause a crab to loose a leg. If the crab looses more than one leg, this is definitely serious. Crabs can live a long life without one of their legs.

Your hermit crab will grow back this leg. He won't die because of the injury. He will regenerate this fairly quickly. Continue to give him ample amounts of both food and water.

It is not unusual for hermit crabs to lose a leg. They have the ability to do without and/or grow another leg.

Leave him be if he dies he dies. Hermit crabs are cheap often not lasting longer then a year. Their isn't anything you can do for him anyway.
