If you notice that your crab no longer curls in to his shell at all, or if he is losing legs, he may be ill.

Check your hermit crab's apperance. Discoloration, signs of mites, flies, or other bugs, and especially dropped limbs can all be signs of illness. Also, if your crab has discarded it's old shell and not adopted another one, it is most likely ill. If you observe your crab each day, you will know when something is wrong.

Look for any discoloration or change in behavior. Abandoning the shell and not picking up another one can be a bad sign. Also look for insect infestations in the cage.

The most prominent signs of a hermit crab being sick are that it starts losing legs fast and are not able to retreat into their shells. They may become inactive.

Observe the whether it is shake off legs , examine if it can't coil in it's shell, motionless, notice odors, check the shell for signs, loss of appetite, slow movement
