Birds eat all kinds of things, but the simplest things to do to encourage birds are to plant flowering shrubs for hummingbirds and grasses for the seed eaters.

Seeds for a variety of birds/sizes: Black oil sunflower, thistle, safflower, shelled no-salt sunflower and millet are good ones. Suet for insect eating birds. Pennington wild bird seed provides these (except for suet which is separate) plus additional nutrients that are added to help birds stay healthier.

Generally birds like to eat ripe seeds of plants, small worms cereals etc. It is not clear from your doubt the type of birds available in your yard. Some birds like parrot likes ripe banana. Most of the birds like seeds.
