Elias Howe, born July 9, 1819, was an American inventor who refined previous sewing ideas into a functional machine. On September 10, 1846, he obtained the first patent for a sewing machine that used a lockstitch design. It consisted of three parts; a needle with the eye at the point, a shuttle operating beneath the cloth, and an automatic feed.
