For the most part, a coroner or medical examiner is a licensed physician with a specialty in pathology. Some communities elect a coroner; in other places the job is posted.

Most often, degrees or training in chemistry, biology, forensic sciences, medicine, or law/criminal justice is helpful. However in some states and counties(Indiana being one) the title and position of coroner is often an elected position and actually can require less education that in many other places. Check with your local government offices.

One way to become a coroner is to have a medical degree or become a certified doctor. You can also enter this field with a BA in biological science, criminology, anatomy or forensic science. A coroner covers many areas so the more educated you are the faster you will advance.
