Leaded gasoline was largely phased out by 1986. As of January 1, 1996 the Clean Air Act banned the sale of leaded gas. The EPA, who worked to reduce lead in gasoline since its inception, issued its first reduction standards in 1973.

The switch to unleaded gasoline happened in 1974. This was mainly to correspond with the new catalytic converters that manufactures were putting on their vehicles.

1 January 1996, the Clean Air Act banned the sale of leaded fuel for use in on-road vehicles. You can still use leaded gasoline in off road vehicles.

Surprisingly they didn't completely eliminate the sale of any leaded gas until 1996. It was due in part to the Clean Air Act.
