This is a classic interview question. The interviewer doesn't expect you to know the answer, but that you'll share your thought process. Approximately 168,000 is the answer.

There are 187,097 retail location selling motor fuel in u. s. These locations sell 344,765. 9 gallons of gasoline and 85081. 8 gallons of low sulfur diesel fuel per day.

If there are 187,000 stations and they sell 344,000 galloms a day that is less than two gallons per station per day on gas and about half a gallon of deisel. pretty sure these numbers are wrong.  add a comment

The last census indicated that there are between 120 to 140 thousand gas stations across our nation. There could be more since the last census was a few years ago.
