There are a number of possible causes, but a common one is yeast. Yeast can result from an imbalance in bacteria, and can be treated with improved diet. Contact dermatitis is also a possibility. Use a mild laundry detergent. If self-treatment doesn't work within a few day, it's important to see a doctor.

My OB advised me to always wash my breast when I was breastfeeding because milk is an attraction to bacteria. This rash can be caused by a lot of things like an allergy to a food or a cloth or it could be the friction caused by breastfeeding your baby.

It could be anything, just because you are breastfeeding does not automatically make you immune to the same aliments you would have if not breastfeeding. Go to your doc if you are worried.

Rash's are usually from not drying out good before dressing again. Can't have a moist area or a rash will pop up and it can hurt to nurse it it's close or on the nipple. You can nurse through it even if it hurts cause it will go away.

The rash could be thrush, a type of yeast infection. It's also possible to get a heat rash from a damp nursing bra or close contact with a warm baby.

Any rash developed while breastfeed should be looked at by your doctor. You do not want to risk passing anything to your child and you want to make sure that you don't have an infection.

It is probably candida (also called yeast, monilla or thrush). This is a fungus that thrives in warm, dark, moist environments, such as mucus membranes of the mouth and vagina, diaper areas, skin folds, bra pads and on persistently wet nipples.
