Sometimes, it's hard to see all of baby's organs--including kidneys--due to the baby's position. The doctor will usually have you return another day when the baby is more cooperative. The kidneys usually appear black on ultrasound, because the processes the amniotic fluid it swallows in the kidneys. If they're not appearing, there could be a problem with the kidney function.
