It could possibly be an ear infection. Also colds and viruses can conjure up pain in this area. Another reason could be nerve damage in the area.

If you are experiencing pain and can feel a little lump around the size of a small pea behind your ear, you could have a swollen lymph node. I had this once after I had a cold, and it went away with no complications in a few days.

It's possible that you have a clogged ear with wax, or it's possible you have an ear infection and need to a doctor. It also might be the onset of a migraine headache.

This sounds as though your ear could be infected or fluid could be built up behind the eardrum. Avoid getting water in the ears.
