No, contractions are not a shooting pain. If you have ever had cramps during your monthly cycle, contractions are very similar. Only they are much more intense and the absolute worst cramps you have experienced. But at the same time it can be different for every woman.

When i was pregnant and had my first child the contractions were not a shooting pain. The contractions were very similar to the pain encountered while menstruating. They are in the lower abdomin and come on slowly. They were not sharp or shooting pains. It is quite comparable to a really bad stomach ache.

Contractions are more like a cramping sensation than a shooting pain. You will feel them around your mid-section and they will radiate from your sides/back to the front. The cramping sensation will get stronger as the time for birth gets closer. You may also have "back labor" which means you may have a pretty severe backache too.

The pain is dull and strong. It feels like a super strong menstrual cramp. The pain is not a sharp or shooting pain but you can feel it coming and building to the tops of its strength and then easing off.
