If the brakes squeak when applied and they are newer or if driving in dusty conditions often it could be dust and can usually be solved by washing your car. Brake pads are designed to squeak when you apply the brakes when they need to be replaced, but before they do damage. You most likely need new brake pads.

A few reasons the brakes on a Kia Optima would be squeaky are worn out brake pads, dirty rotors, or even warped rotors.

Squeaking brakes typically indicate something rubbing. The break pads can wear to the point that the backing rubs against the rotor.

Usually if your brakes are squeaking that means the brake pads are running out of life. What causes the squeaking is a little metal tab on your brake pads that rubs the rotor when your brake pad material is low enough to let the clip rub.

2013 Kia Optima-On cold starts my brakes squeak. Called dealership, they said in the manual this is normal. I have owned other new cars & this is not a problem. Weird that Kia knows about it but does not do anything to repair it.
