This could be several non-serious things such as stepped on a rock when he went outside. Or he could have been chewing on his foot and made it sore. Just look over all the pads to see if there is a cut and if so apply an antibiotic cream.

A limp in a dog could be caused by a broken bone, a pulled muscle, a sprain or a forgien body in the between the pads on his paw. He may hav rock salt caught there if it is winter and the dog lives in a snowy climate. He may have a cut on his paw also.

There could be something stuck in his paw. There could also be a cut on it. If this is an outside dog then it is more likely that could happen.

Your dog might have hurt it's paw or it might have a sticker or something in his foot. Check between your dog's toes to see if a sticker is lodged in there. Feel if the foot is hot. If it's hot it could be hurt or infected. If he contines to limp, take him to the vet.

Your dog may have injured his paw by stepping on something sharp such as a stick, needles, or broken glass. Check his foot and see if there's anything still splintered in there.
