So many things could be wrong. He could have punctured his foot while roaming, gotten into a dogfight. If he is older it could even be arthritis. He needs to be taken to a vet right away. If there is a puncture wound anywhere it could get infected and needs to be treated.

Many dogs limp for different reasons associated with the legs and hip areas. If your dog can bend his leg at the knee with no pain, it is most likely an issue with his hips. Just like people, dogs can become arthritic. Try letting him rest and giving him specical treats made with glucosamine found in any pet store.

There are a lot of reasons that your dog could be limping. Something as simple as overexertion can cause limping for a few days. However, it could be much more serious such as a fracture or even a tumor on the bone. If the limping persists for more than 24 hours, I would recommend seeing a veterinarian.

Most likely he strained a muscle or twisted it wrong. This can happen especially when it is icy or muddy outside. If there are no obvious sores or swelling try to keep him off of it for a couple of days and if it doesn't get better you will need to take him to the vet to be checked.
