It may be lymphadenitis, inflammation of lymph nodes, usually due to infection. There are lymph nodes located under the arm pit, amongst other places, such as the throat.

This is likely a swollen lymph node. Everyone is prone to getting swollen lymph nodes when they are sick, even with minor colds as the lymphatic system is what fights the diseases an infections we contract. It would be best to monitor the lump. Most will go away on their own, otherwise seek a pediatrician's advice.

The lump could be caused by a clogged pore, an infected lymph node, an ingrown hair, or possibly a bug bite of some sort. I have had a clogged pore personally and know they are painful. An ingrown hair or bug bite can be seen by doctor to rule out the infected lymph node possibility.

This could very well be a cyst. You should try to take him to your pediatrician as soon as possible. I would also get a second opinion. My daughter had a cyst under her arm and it took five doctors to actually diagnose it as a cyst.It was very scary for me.

If it is under the armpit, it is more than likely a swollen/enlarged gland. This can be caused by a variety of things; infection, allergies, etc. They are usually not serious, but it is worth it to get them checked out.
